The test drive is being run across select locations wherein guests can order headsets and watch preloaded VR experiences nicknamed “VR Postcards”. These VR simulations are especially designed to inspire travel. Marriott has invested in marketing this technology  as their ‘Travel Brilliantly’ campaign. They have set up ‘Teleporters’, which are model science-fiction-inspired phone booths to “teleport” guests to a Marriott lobby and then let them experience pseudo vacations at scenic locales.

Manufacturing:

Be it design for manufacturing, design for maintenance or design for operations-virtual reality is taking the manufacturing industry by storm. VR systems are now widely used by engineers from big names in the industry like Caterpillar, General Motors, and Jaguar. VR is used for virtually “creating” products for testing purposes, factory planning, and design of layouts, production lines, and product prototypes. The technology is also used to test design principles, safety, and much more. Over the last seven years , Ford Motor Company has made VR central to its automotive development.

The adoption of an advanced 3D virtual reality environment–The Cave-by automotive giant JLR  has led it to qualitative and constructive decision making and enhanced capabilities to cope with dynamic technology and design changes in the automobile sector. The implementation of virtual reality in engineering and product design allows people to better understand and interact with product data while also facilitating communication between designers, manufacturers, trainers, marketers, and management.

A team from the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) of Sheffield University envisages a futuristic VR aided shape shifting production line which rearranges itself to produce the best production line model to boost efficiency.

Defence and Military :

Virtual Reality is fast changing the way we ready ourselves for war and is being increasingly used for training the perfect soldiers. Defence ministries are today tying up with electronic firms to build simulation trainings with ready to use 3D models of tanks, guns, etc. to provide realistic war trainings, sniper trainings, parachute and flight trainings, and so on. A large part of space training at NASA involves training in a virtual simulated environment. The major areas where NASA uses VR is for  preparing astronauts for space walks, robotics operations, situations where astronauts get detached from the shuttle, etc. VR is an important part of a NASA operation, not only before the astronauts go to space but also while they are in space.
